Here is a great way to help your food and drinks in your fridges and freezers last longer. Buy yourself refridgerator/freezer thermometers (1 for each area i.e., 1 for your fridge and 1 for your freezer). If you have more than 1 fridge or freezer, buy enough for them also. Take note of where the normal temperature levels for your fridge and freezer are on the thermometer. This is how cold the fridge and freezer should be to keep your food and drinks at the proper storage temperatures hlping them not to spiol as fast. The fridges normal temperature is usually around 40 degrees, and the freezers is around 0-10 degrees. Adjust your fridges and freezers so the temperature is within their proper levels. The best way to start is to set your fridge or freezer at their normal level. This level is usually indicated on your fridges or freezers temperature control by an emphasized number or letter. Your owners manual can tell you this also. It may also be written on the fridge or freezer somewhere. This level is where the manufacture has determined the best setting is for your fridge or freezer. A thermometer will tell you if this is the proper setting better than the manufacturer does. If you have adjust your fridge or freezer, leave it on the new setting for at least 24 hours and take note of how the temperature changes (i.e. is it too cold, or does it get to warm before the fridge turns on) and then adjust your fridge or freezer accordingly. If the fridge is too cold, it may freeze things. If the freezer is too cold, it may cause your food to get freezer burn faster. If the fridge is too warm, your food and drinks will tend spoil or go bad faster. If the freezer is too warm, the food won't freeze hard enough and won't stay as long. If you have ice cream in your freezer, this is a great way to check and see if your freezer is too warm. If its too soft, the freezer isn't cold enough. If its too hard, its too cold. Ice cream will never replace a good temrmometer though. Keeping your fridges and freezers at the proper temperatures will help your foods and drinks to last longer and to not spoil as quickly, which will help you save money by not having to throw away food as fast. A fridge at the proper temperature should be able to keep a gallon of milk for at least week and a half to 2 weeks or more. If things seem to be spoiling or going bad too fast, the temperature may not be at the proper level.

To help your fridge or freezer run more efficiently, check the coils (usually located on the bottom or on the back of your fridge or freezer) to make sure they are clean and not full of dust and dirt. If they are dity, clean them. Go to Lowes, Home Depot or your favorite hardware store. They make an attachment that will go on the end of your vacuum cleaners hose. They are usually universal and should fit any vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment. This attachment should be able to fit between the coils to be able to get to the back and middle of coils. This attachment usually works better than the crevice tool does. They also have special brushes for this purpose if your don't want to use your vacuum cleaner. These coils help to remove the heat from the interior of your fridge or freezer and remove it to the room. This is why they are always warm after the fridge or freezer runs. You should also always keep an air space around your fridge or freezer to allow the heat to get out more efficiently also. You should always keep a couple of inches on the sides and at least 6 inches from the back wall, especially if your fridge or freezer has its coils on the back of it. This will help to allow the air to circulate around your fridge or freezer more efficiently and will help to keep it from running as long. Fridges and freezers are actually enclosed air conditioners and tend to work on the same basic principles as your air conditioners do in the summertime.

Doing these things should help your food and drinks last longer and your fridge or freezer run more efficiently.

This is not accurate...

Home freezers should not be "between 0 and 10 degrees." They should be zero degrees or below. Although it is slowed, bacterial growth can proceed at 10 degrees.

If ice cream is too hard at 0 degrees then 15 seconds in the microwave will soften it enough for serving.

Additionally, refrigerators should not be "around 40 degrees." They should be 40 degrees *maximum,* but actually set to as close to 32 degrees as possible without freezing for maximum food safety.
