Rent a movie rather than going to the the theater--this may seem obvious, but it's an easy first step. Also, check out the prices of the DVD rental places near you--sometimes a locally-owned shop may charge less than a chain store, and they might even have a more interesting selection.

Don't buy your popcorn and candy from the DVD rental shop; plan ahead and get it from the grocery store.

Some communities have "summer in the park" showings of vintage films with no admission fee, or there may be a museum, school, or church near you that has movie nights for free--some will request a donation, but it's still a cheaper night out than your local movie house.
